The flowers, vegetables and herbs growing on the grounds of the Salvation Army office in Palmer, Alaska, is open to passersby who’d like to harvest fresh, local food from the raised beds.

Ever since I started organizing a local effort in Denver for the nationalPlant a wrangle for the Hungrycampaign in 2010 , I ’ve been recreate by the hundreds of individual nurseryman who take part every year .

I ’ve also learn as more community and school gardens also embrace the mind of growing and giving fruits , veg and herbaceous plant to facilitate give their neighbors in penury .

But on a late trip to Palmer , Alaska , I realise a unlike variety of giving feat . On the grounds of the Salvation Army ’s part , at a busy intersection , there ’s a vegetable garden that encourage folk to harvest what they need .

The raised beds are planted with fruit , vegetables , herbs and flowers that make the garden as beautiful as it is eatable . There are different colors of boodle , kale , Brussels sprouts , strawberry , leeks , nasturtium , celery , Swiss chard , cabbage , collard Green , chives and more .

There are also little pairs of scissors , conveniently ground to each seam , for snipping and clipping whatever is want .

A sign at the site encourages anyone and everyone to glean responsibly by “ taking only what you need and the time to pull a skunk . ”

While I was there , I saw one visitor expend the scissor grip to reap a plastic grocery bag full of red leaf lettuce and then pull several handfuls of weeds to add to another suitcase .

The Grow Palmer effort is manifest throughout the townspeople , too . container of fresh herb and vegetables dot the streets , just waiting to be pick . “ Grow Palmer ” signage means the harvesting is complimentary .

At the oddment of the time of year , Tennessean gather at a Harvest Party to put the Salvation Army vegetable garden to bed . That last harvest is donated to local food pantries and Senior Services . Then the planning begins for the next planting that pop as presently as the garden thaws in spring .
