Astrophytum ornatumis indigenous to the Central Plateau ofMexico .
Astrophytum ornatumis a small cactus with a solitary theme with 5 to 10 straight person to spirally arranged ribs lined with clusters of spines . This species is the large and improbable in the genus . The stem is orbicular when young but becomes reasonably columnar with geezerhood , growing up to 4 feet ( 1.2 m ) improbable and 1 animal foot ( 30 cm ) in diam . It is greyish - greenness to dark green with legion white woolly eccentric for protection from the sun . The phonograph needle - like spines are yellowish at first , late brown , and lastly grey . Each areole bears 5 to 11 stellate spine and one foresightful primal spine . The radial spines are up to 8 column inch ( 2 centimetre ) long .

The flowers are canary-yellow yellow , up to 3 inches ( 7.5 cm ) long , and appear at the peak of the shank in summertime .
Astrophytums are not vigorous plants , expect a pot of longanimity to reach their full potential . Keep regularly water and feeding them during the growing time of year and repot annually to give them space to grow . They need a temperate , dry winter and control they do not overwater to keep off rot their roots . They will get marvelous flower if give sufficient care once they reach maturity . Watch out for common cactus pests like aphids and plate , as well — these can often be involve concern of by a good eco - favorable pesticide or simply wiped away with a cloth .
Repot on a regular basis to facilitate them develop . Astrophytumsshould be repotted at the starting time of the growing season for best resultant role , allow them to grow into the telling specimens for which the genus is known . Protect your hands before repotting due to their stiff spike , wind the plant life out all at once , and then replace it in a larger pot and backfill with soil .
