Big Garden Art Ideas
I first dreamed up this task years ago . If you ’ve been reading here a while , you know I love birds and have a Brobdingnagian affectionateness for bird ’s nests .
I also love really big ( and really small ) fine art . Average size just seems too ordinary some time !
When I first thought about making this task , we live on on a property without any trees . Sad , I eff . I used to spy around on yard - waste pick up day to collect branches . finally we moved to our new nursing home and , I ’m felicitous to say , there is an teemingness of fallen offset to be found .

Inspired By Eagles
We populate in an orbit that has a fair number of eagle . They tend to nestle at the sharpness of wood , quite far from the roads , but their nest - building style is well-heeled to spot . There ’s no misidentify the lot of branches , twigs , and other debris they have hale up into the tree tops to form their massive , encompassing open nest . It ’s quite a edifice feat .
Every so often I see an eagle carrying a big leg to its nest and it ’s really quite spectacular when you think about the weightiness they can hale . Plus , the nest look like awe-inspiring loose - air treehouses which append to the allure .
My giant nest is a hybrid of this . I too used an array of branch but top out it off with big drab eggs to represent my love of the Hellenic Robin ’s egg . I have demented deference for nesting birds and you ’ll never see a harder working animal than a bird tend to its hatchlings , working longsighted hours to keep those mouths fed .

I did not , however , haul these offshoot to the top of my shed with my snoot . I opted to be conventional and use a ladder .

Supplies
Step-By-Step Instructions
To make the nest , I first dilute a clump of tree branches into 2 - 3 foot length . I also cut off any side shoot . Be sure to useear protectorswhenever using noisy power tools .
forgather your provision and find a nice , full-grown working space like an outdoor mesa .
Or , construct the nest right on top of your shed if it ’s dependable to do so and you have a helper .

To forge the nest , place 5 branches in a circle , overlapping all of the ends . Use exterior deck screw propeller and wire to stop up the branch ends together .
carry on progress the nest by tally more and more branches , always crop in a roofy until it ’s as big as you need . you’re able to increase the size of the circle as you build up if you have enough materials .
Cut out a piece ofhardware clothor chicken conducting wire to match the figure of the bottom of the nest . Secure in place with an electric stapler or modest wood shag . I found this gave the nest extra constancy and I can toss more materials in ( like leaves and branchlet ) to take the nest without them falling out .

My nest is about 3 - 4 feet at the widest points and weighs about 30 lb . It seemed immense to me when I was making it but actually looks a bit small on the shed . However , I would have had to make it on top of the shed if I wanted it any bigger so I ’m happy with it the way it is .
The gargantuan plastic eggs I used are only available at our dollar stores around Easter sentence so mark your calendar .
I placed ass in the ballock and suspend them from thread on a stick . This made it easy to habituate the spray - on plastic primer and ( after drying ) add the blue acrylate resin craft paint .

When the blue paint was totally dry , I added a few layer ofoutdoor Mod Podgeto protect the paint and help seal them shut .
I hauled the nest up a 12 - foot run to the top of my shed through sheer , goosey will - power . It ’s heavy!I think I might require to anchor it to the shed roof but the overall weight seems to hold it in position . We ’ll see how it fare during eminent - wind storms .
To keep the eggs in place , I keep the screws in them from painting . The end of the screws are wrapped in telegram ( I use16 - gauge wirefor all form of garden task ) which is wrap around a brick ( hide in the nest ) . They seem firmly in place but , again , we ’ll see how they do during those wild summer storms when we get tornado admonition . I guess if a tornado is possible , recede 3 plastic nut should be the least of my worries .

I was envisioning a larger nest , but I ’m pretty happy with this one . It ’s a precious trace and definitely pays court to my beloved wild Bronx cheer .
If you actually make one for your garden , I ’d love to see it .
And I ’m happy to finally ascertain this one off my Garden Art To - Make list .
