Fabulous Fritillaries.
One of the pleasure of Spring is the appearance of the first checkered lily . The checker - table or snake ’s head fritillary : Fritillaria meleagrisis the first to come out in my garden . This is a native flower but with the loss of 97 % of our wild flower meadows many web site have been lost where these gorgeous bloom once flourished . Fox Meadow , near Framsden , Suffolk is the fourth largest Fritillary meadow in the country . Here you could see up to 300,000 flowers ; a wonderful sight . It is in the tending of Suffolk Wildlife Trust . you could make an appointee to go to their receptive Clarence Day in April this yr . The phone number is ; 01473 890089 .
Pauline atleadupthegardenpathhas them growing in her woodland and she has written about them in a late post . Do have a look , there are some fabulous photograph .
Fritillaria verticillatais out now too and is a particular favourite of mine . It does not seed around obligingly asFritillaria meleagrisdoes but it is very graceful .

Fritillaria imperialis ‘Lutea’
Another endearing one which I acquired this year is Fritillaria hermonis . I hope it will spread out because I think it is stunning .
The littleFritillaria uva vulpisis as cheap as chipping to buy and always very authentic , coming up year after year .
I must not block the Crown Imperials : Fritillaria imperialiswhich are lovely even if they do odour of foxes .

I will finish with the high-priced littleFritillaria michailovskyiwhich I can not keep in the garden . I maturate it in the nursery then bring it into the house when it is in flower .
Fritillaries are caviarto the dreaded lily mallet so a day-by-day patrol is necessary now to squash the horrid thing .

I would love to see which fritillaries other bloggers are growing .

I love the nodding flowers of the fritillaries , another plant not pronto acquire in southern California . I laughed at your reference to the one that smells of Fox . We have no fox here but I take it that fox have an unpleasantly strong odor ?
Oh I do like the look of fritillaria pallidflora Chloris which I ’ve not come across in the flesh yet . I unhappily spotted the first lily beetle of the yr yesterday . It ’s no more .
