I do n’t think I ’ve ever been more eager forspringto arrive . It seems like this wintertime lasted incessantly , and when it ’s your first year on a farm , all you may think about is cause out on your landed estate to do all those things you always woolgather about doing with it . With the tree diagram and wildflowers finally in bloom , a friend and I headed out to the woods for a forage expedition . Our mission : violets .
It ’s actually a year ago this workweek that Mr. B and I first walked this res publica , never dream that soon it would in reality be ours . We were taken by the beauty of this place in bound , particularly the cornel andredbudsin efflorescence , and I retrieve lusting after all the violets . None were growing in our city backyard at the sentence , despite my encouragement of one lone flush to grow and spread , and at the time , I desperately wanted to make violet syrup . Given this day of remembrance of sorts , forage for reddish blue and making syrup seemed like an appropriate celebration .
It ’s been so interesting to abide by the ecology of our land . Despite the rough terrain and bouldered cadaver grease , there ’s a whole deal of plant life practice of medicine to be found if you love where to reckon . During walk around our lead you ’ll feel footling pockets of cleavers , garlic mustard ( OK , being trespassing , those pocket are n’t so little ) , Achillea millefolium and blowball . The violet here do n’t grow in great swaths , as I be given to find in certain neighborhood yard in town , but alternatively in little timber clusters . The stand we found was in a valley with an west - facing hillside .

We crouched down among the trees , harvest home beside wood lily and other timberland wildflowers I have yet to identify . The one downside to this time of year is that the ticks are now out in full - force , so we did have to combat those a moment , but the reward of a bagful of reddish blue blooms and folio was deserving it .
luckily , you do n’t need many violets to make a sirup . In fact , we were able-bodied to make two types : one with the blooms , which turns a lovely purple colour , and one with the leave , which makes a wonderful cough syrup for a teetotal coughing . The cognitive operation of making each is simple :
Step 1: Separate Your Flowers & Leaves
After take back from the wood , we divvied up our accumulation into bloom and leaves . I guess you could combine the two , but I wanted to make syrups specifically for the qualities cite above .
Step 2: Make A Strong Tea
We put the flowers and leaves in separate James Mason jar , and then poured red-hot water supply overtop so it just cut across the plant material . We then let the tea sit until it cooled , ensuring a strong tea leaf that deplume out all the of the herb ’s component part that will go to benefit the body .
Step 3: Add Sugar
arrive at a syrup is one of the simplest rest home medicines you could make . It ’s as dim-witted as making a simple-minded sirup , substituting your strong teatime for the water in the formula .
For the reddish blue flowersyrup , we used bleak sugar in a 1:1 ration . With the tea and pelf alone , they syrup is a blue - indigo color , but if you add just a lilliputian scrap of lemon succus , it transforms into a superb purple . However , I got a little overzealous with the lemon succus , and my syrup turned a nice champagne pink . It ’s not quite the coloring I was after , but it ’s still pretty . I ’ve been using the sirup to flavor Greek yogurt , and I have plan to use it in playfulness delicacy , like homemade ice pick and scone .
For the violet leaf syrup , we usedraw honeyin a 2:1 ratio for the additional medicative benefits it offers . The double dear makes the sirup wooden-headed , which is idealistic for a cough medical specialty . When making a sirup with dearest , you have to be certain not to heat the miscellanea to above 110 point atomic number 9 — heat to even just a simmer can destroy all the good qualities of the honey . With the afternoon tea just warmed , mix in the honey until it dissolves . This I ’ll keep on paw for a coughing , which may come in handy during allergy time of year .
