Freeze-dried meets sunbursts; Succulent design; Kale nom noms

Well , geez , here we go again .

Hottest summers , coldest winters , what ’s a gardener to do ? For one affair , do n’t freak out out ! look a calendar month or more to cut back those frightened cycads ( sago medal ) .

Garden house decorator Sue Nazar ( who will be on theMaster Gardener ’s spell in May ) has a tip to restore your palms and cycad this spring . “I employ palm food ( has magnesium and Mn , and other good stuff for palms ) , alternating with a just ground drench of fish / seaweed emulsion , and diligence of compost too . This create for a happy sago and many hot flash of leaves each year . ”She also likes to add Super Thrive with the seaweed to help oneself out plant in distress . Thanks for the gratuity , Sue !

I did go ahead and chop up back my Barbados cherries ( Malpighia glabra ) .   They get hold of a hit last year , but arrive back just fine . The bay Stan Laurel beyond : no hurt .

ThisFreesia laxa , like all of mine , withered in the extended freezing , but they ’re all step on it to catch up , since they hate to overlook an naming .

The roses in reality got bite this time , but are already back in clientele , like this heavenward bound Lady Banks .

She take some shaping , but since she efflorescence but once a spring , I ’ll wait . I did lop the rest of the rose wine on Sunday , snipping off their fried foliation . With all the rosy leaf buds shoot out , they ’ll be wearing party dresses by this weekend .

Okay , everyone want spring starflower ( Ipheion uniflorum ) !   Ca n’t consider I block to get more last fall . Somebody ’s already heels over head in dearest .

Like the postal service , neither C. P. Snow nor whatever deters summer snowflake ( Leucojum aestivum ) .

Or Narcissus ‘ Gigantic Star ’ . I highly commend this one that returns every spring .

I make out , get laid my first Iris reticulata : this one J.S. Dijt that I stimulate atThe Natural Gardenerlast evenfall . I only got 5 , but they ’re on my hit list for next drop ’s budget . I cogitate I first saw them on Jenny’sRock Rose blogand made a note . Hers were a different color but I want all these diminutives !

Since drought is more in our forecast than bizarre freezes , originative conception with succulent plants is still new to many of us . So , this week on CTG , Tom receive with Eric Pedley fromEast Austin Succulentsfor his passionate energy to make succulent trick .

And , since his passion started with just a few cuttings , he shows you how to do it , along with hisfavorite potting mixfor succulent and cactus plants . Meet Eric at theZilker Garden Festival March 27 & 28and at theSan Antonio Cactus & Xerophyte Society show & sale April 14 – 16 .

On tour , architecture , architectural plant , and organic crop come together on rooftop gardens that please the eye and the environment in this lakeside pose designed byPatrick Kirwinand undertaking architectThomas Tornbjerg of Bercy Chen Studio .

Even if you do n’t have a rooftop garden , you may “ steal ” some of Patrick ’s idea , which I ’m certainly doing .   One idea to slip fromDaphneis her featured plant , soft leaf yucca ( Yucca recurvifolia ) .

I know some of yours bewilder halt - sting , but mine made it through drought and extended block just hunky-dory . I have it away it because it ’s the perfect easy - care body structure in a bed that gets more shade than sunlight . It does get a few hours of hot bang Dominicus , which makes for a troublesome area . It ’s a keeper for me , even in my the Great Compromiser filth !

We thankLinda Ritzenfor her with child question : Do we need to irrigate our lawns in winter?Well , it count on your soil and rainfall . The origin are still growing , so if your grunge is very dry , you may want to irrigate once a calendar month .   Otherwise , take a rupture !

The CTG gang is still speak aboutTrisha ’s crispy kale chipsfor this week ! Yeah , yeah , do lots of good for you thing with thebeautiful kale varietiesthat Trisha features , like herkale and bean soup . Then go for the chip ! By the way , recently I was atIt ’s About Thyme , and Diane and Chris are growing lots of gelt , enough to make travelling bag of chip .

Also , while at IAT , I apprehend someCrocus sativus , in hope for strings of saffron . My current one keep amount back ,   though have n’t given me a gloaming bloom yet . But I wanted more for their cute foliation and maybe saffron from the red brand one of these day !

Until next week , Linda
