It ’s hard to believe , but exactly 10 years ago this calendar month we set about creating our small self - sufficient homestead on a 2 + Accho plot of overgrown earth .
That ’s correct , this month , we are celebrate the tenth day of remembrance of Old World Garden Farms !
And the farm is certainly a far cry from where it was back then . It was September of 2010 , and all we had were dreams . There was no garden , no barn , and no poulet cage .
Nor was there a hemangioma simplex patch , Malus pumila trees , grapevine vines or blueberry Bush . And most of all , their certainly was n’t a cabin or a household to call home . But arm with a 10 yr program , we were dictated to make it happen !
Creating A Self Sufficient Homestead – The Plan
One thing is for certain , to fulfill any pipe dream , you have to have a plan . So we sit down down and scribbled out our 10 yr plan to create a homestead that we could hopefully , someday actually call family .
We started with what was most important to us – creating a more simple , ego sufficient life .
A life in which we could grow and save most of our solid food , build and make more of what we used , and follow our passion of horticulture , preparation and all thing DIY .
But we also wanted to do it with a zero - debt doctrine . After all , debt = stress . And we knew the more we learned to do ourselves , the more we could save .
There was one last goal we both tally on more than anything else . And to us , it really is the closed book to creating a homesteading success and sprightliness .
And that goal?To always , always , always find the fun in everything we do . significance , to relish the path , the journey and the procedure as much as the last issue .
It is one thing we certainly have always done , and will always do ! Oh , yes , have we ever screwed up projects ! In fact , many , many time . And oh have we ever failed at building and planting thing .
But we have laughed and smile all along the direction . And more importantly , kept at whatever we were doing until we envision it out . After all , the only prison term you truly neglect is when you give up .
And aboveboard , we both will tell you we have enjoyed the unconscious process probably even more than the results . And that admit the failures right along with the successes .
One thing is for certain , whether you live in a tiny flat , or have 5000 acres , anyone can be a trivial better by becoming more self sufficient .
By learning to grow some of their own nutrient . Or perhaps building and creating thing they need . Or possibly just by slowing down and enjoying sprightliness without the need to be festinate . See : The Five Simple Secrets To make A More Self Sufficient Life .
When we began this journeying 10 long time ago , we started document it all with what was a little tiny web log we call Old World Garden Farms . In fact , it was somewhat of a joke to keep family and Friend from conceive we had recede our mind by attempt to acquire all our own food !
But somehow it evolved and grow into a life of its own . And we discovered we loved piece of writing and verbalise about what we loved doing just as much as doing it . It eventually led to our first bookGrowing Simple , something we never imagined we would be write some 10 age ago !
So what are our goal for the next 10 years ? Well , for sealed , that number 1 goal of delight lifetime and the process is still and will always be firm seated at issue 1 .
But beyond that , for us , it is to keep spreading the joy of dewy-eyed living through our writing .
This come November , we will be creating a 5 part series on create a homestead that will lay out the footmark one by one to creating a bare life on less than an Akko . Hopefully , it can assist as a guide for others looking to do the same .
But one thing is for indisputable – we will continue creating our slight self sufficient homestead , and even more savour drop time in the garden , or cooking or canning , or only enjoying a more position back life on the farm .
