How to Line a Wooden Planter Box

1. Check Your Wooden Planter For Drainage Holes

The first whole step is tocheck whether or not the wooden planter loge has drainage holes . If it does n’t , you ’ll need to drill some equally across the infrastructure . Without drainage , water will sit on the charge plate creating almost impossible grow conditions .

Here I ’ve drilled regularly spaced holes of a decent size . This should be enough to let water escape .

2. Fit Your Chosen Plastic

I ’m using an former compost grip because they ca n’t be recycled and they are specifically made to hold compost – in other words they are the perfect option !

Some gardener suggest usingweed membraneas this let the water through and forbid soil touching the Natalie Wood . In my experience , it does n’t allow for as much protective cover as credit card .

I ’ve find the unspoiled way to fit the charge plate is to lie in it across the top and crowd it mildly down in the corners .

It needs to fit well , but not so tightly it ’s at risk of tearing . Do n’t worry about being too precise , pretty soon it ’ll be covered in compost and out of mess .

Do n’t go mightily to the top edge of the boxas that face untempting . You only want charge plate as mellow as the soil line .

Another problem with fulfill a container too eminent is that grime washes from the top when it rain down or you irrigate it . About 2 - 3 Cm from the top is usually enough .

3. Fix Your Plastic in Place

Staple or nail tack into place , pull the formative taut as you go . Leave enough way for it to settle in the corner .

Any kind of metallic element in wood will cause damage and allow wet to enter – but in my experience gum does n’t hold the liner in place . Staples cause the least Mrs. Henry Wood impairment – but do n’t go overboard !

In the past I have staple perfectly and in a bit of a wonky line – it does n’t matter too much so long as the staples hold , and like I said earlier , it ’ll be track up with soil before long enough .

4. Trim the Excess Plastic

Trim off excess with kitchen scissors and add basic where needed .

5. Pierce Your Drainage Holes

Use the screwdriver or pencil to force through the charge card in railway line with the drainage hole .

This is an important tone . Without drainage holes in the plastic , you ’re creating a swamp and not manyplantscan survive those conditions !

For the longest life potential , handle the exterior of your wooden planter with a wood paint , decking oil , or preservative .

staples

I useddecking oil(I apply it before adding the liner ) as I had some leave over from anele the decking .

Decking oil forms a roadblock between Sir Henry Joseph Wood and the element and leaves the adorable wood coloring in place . instead , you could paint your plantation owner with woodwind instrument paint to match a color topic .

That ’s it – now is the fun part of filling the container with land and planting it up to creating something interesting .

trim liner

I conceive I ’ll use this plantation owner to grow some tasty tortoise food for Alberto . A mixture ofcampanula , sedumand clovers would grow well in here .

you may habituate this process to line wooden planters of any size . The one I ’ve lined today is 60 by 40 cms , but I have also lined an 8 metre by 2 metre set up layer with a intermixture ofcompostbags and rubble bags .

That was 4 years ago and it ’s still going strong . conservationist report plastic can take up to450 yearsto break down , so your wooden lining will go the space .

pierce holes

Do n’t be afraid to have a go , your planter does not need to look perfect !
