A gardener shares images of one of her favorite plants

Barbara Cain of Norwell , Massachusetts , sent in these image of one of her favorite plants .

Eucomis comosa‘Sparkling Burgundy ‘ is a tender medulla in New England ( hardy in Zones 8–11 ) and is sometimes called ananas lily . The foliage is a rose window of dark burgundy straplike leaves . It can be 24 in panoptic , with a flower stalk of 20 inch or so . It is a sensational accent mark in the sunny garden . I started with one medulla oblongata from Plant Delights Nursery years ago and now have four flora . I dig the bulb after a icing and let the foliation dry out out before hive away it in my cellar . To keep blossom from flopping , I found in leaner grime with beneficial drainage , though I often stake the peak .

One alternative to stake the peak stem if they get floppy is tailor them and invest them in a vase . This species of pineapple lily has flush with a pleasant scent to them , but be warned that some of the other species are pollinated by flies and so have flower that reek rather unpleasant .

A snug feel at the flower spike . The small tuft of small green leaves at the end of the blossom spike are the root of the uncouth name “ pineapple plant lily . ”

An even close tone at the unripened prime . The blossom are a lighter greenish yellow — although they are sometimes even out with pinkish when young — before they get on to a darker green . They ’re beautiful at any point .

A bloom spike with the whole flora . The bold , red - flushed leaves are just as worthy as the prime with this plant . The bright red color develop with plenty of sunshine and undecomposed drainage .
