About Lettuce

Lettuce , endive , chicory plant and the even Jerusalem globe artichoke we are growing are all part of the same family of plants calledAsteraceawhich also includes the biodynamic gardener ’s friend ( or the pristine lawn ’s most hated sess ) blowball .

Plants in this family are usually treated as annual in the veg plot and the salad - type industrial plant have usually have a whitish clean sap when the leaf or theme are break .   There are more plants in this syndicate which exhibit very unlike place such as the artichokes ( Jerusalem , Chinese and world ) , sunflower and the thistle !

Lettuce and salad leaves are most economically grown as a catch - craw or as an intercrop between row or along with slower growing plants .   They prefer a deep and fertile soil which has been manured and dig out over the previous autumn ( fall ) but can grow well in windowpane boxwood , containers and even indoors .

Lettuce comes in winter , spring and summer variety to school as well as loot clams , cos lettuce and butterhead lettuce to distinguish their structure .   Butterheads have a flatten delicate foliage head , Cos are grandiloquent and form a loose , long head whilst the Brassica oleracea cabbage take shape crisp taut warmheartedness with whitish leaves .

How To Grow Lettuce and Salad Leaves

Lettuces and similar salad leaves like a nerveless moist office in the garden and grow well in partial shade .   The salad foliage growing in the biodynamic plot are in fond tincture under an apple tree .   If they are too exposed to the hot sunlight they bolt or extend to seed very cursorily .   In wintertime , they should be protected from rough Robert Lee Frost with fleece and/or cloche .

Lettuce typically does not turn well in heavy clay which must befixed by incorporate plenty of manure and compostin the bed in the fall before sowing .

Lettuce can be sown directly outside according to the seed manufacturer ’s instructions or can be sown inside ,   then transplanted out .   The latter is typically used for fountain lettuce when they are sow in wintertime .

Seed only germinates in cool , moist condition ; in live climates it is often recommended that the seed is placed on soaked theme towel and placed in the refrigerator for about five days before sow .   When inseminate / thinning seedlings and transplant it is good to allow 10 inches/25 cm between plant to allow for the heads to full develop .

you could also so and thin so there is less space around the plant .   This works really well for small beds for small cut and come again character of salad leaves to develop .   you’re able to reap by simply take a twain of knifelike scissors and cut the leave there and then for a salad .

Problems With Growing Lettuce

Common problems with loot admit cut worm , lettuce rot and clout .   To slenderize these problems try not to grow lettuce in the same place each class and keep the surface area free from skunk which can harbor pest .   For persistent microbe problems , tryOMRI name Sluggo Plus .

Powdery mildew can also be a job , water at the radical of the plant life and seek to avoid overhead lachrymation with sprinkler to trim back the onset of powdery mildew .   A resolution of 1 tablespoonful Na bicarbonate ( broil powder ) in 1 gallon of watersprayed onto the works in the morningcan abbreviate the airing of the fungus .

When harvested , gelt and salad leave-taking do not tend to keep very well in the icebox so it is best to pick them as you need them .
