Leaves that make a statement
Hi from Sue Webel in North Canton , Conneticut ( Zone 6a ) .
lately you ask for us to share some of our favorite foliage plants . Creating interesting foliation vignettes has always been my primary goal when form my garden . Here are a few of my many favorites .
Araliacordata‘Sun King ’ ( Zone 4 – 8 is one of my preferred big perennials for foliage . Often suggest for tincture , I find it grow best in a fair amount of sun as long as the soil is n’t too dry . In this surface area of my garden , I love the foliation and textural contrast with another favorite foliage headliner , Ligularia‘Britt Marie Crawford ’ ( Zone 4 – 8),Araliaelata‘Silver Umbrella ’ ( Zone 4 – 9 ) andKalimerisintegrifolia(Zone 5 – 9 ) .

Aralia‘Sun King ’ produce happily in part shade withAcerpalmatum‘Twombly ’s Red Sentinel ’ ( Zone 5 – 9),Gilleniatrifoliata(Zone 4 – 8) , and aHosta(Zone 3 – 9 ) .
Because I grow it all over my garden , I have many pictures ofHakonechloamacra ‘ Aureola ’ ( Zone 5 – 9 ) . LikeAralia‘Sun King ’ , I find it turn well in a variety of soil qualities and Sunday photograph . Here I make love it withEchinacea‘White Swan ’ ( Zone 3 – 8) andCercis canadensis‘Ruby Falls ’ ( Zone 6 – 8) .
In the front garden with a hellebore ( Helleborushyrid , Zone 4 – 9 ) andGeraniummaculatum‘Espresso ’ ( Zone 5 – 8) .

Astilbe‘Dark Side of the Moon ’ ( Zone 4 – 9 ) is relatively novel to the perennial picture but well deserving develop . I consider it one of the best Modern recurrent introduction in years . The almost black foliage is grand , does n’t fade and holds up for most of the season . colored purple flowers are the icing on the patty .
Chasmanthiumlatifolium‘River Mist ’ ( Zone 3 – 8) may be hard to retrieve but it should n’t be . Unlike its homely green full cousin , it does n’t reseed all over the garden .
I have been swinge the praises ofPhloxpaniculate‘Norah Leigh ’ ( Zone 4 – 8) for years . Like many of my other foliage favorites , it grows in a variety of Dominicus and soil status , pairs well with many other plants , and holds up well all season .

Caryopteris(Zone 6 – 8) may not be on your radar as a foliage plant life , but they are among my favorites . They prefer sunny spots with good drainage and tolerate relatively poor soil .
Some caryopteris varieties have n’t been dependably hardy here in zone 6a , but both ‘ White Surprise ’ and ‘ Summer Sorbet ’ have grown gayly here for years .
