Our climate allows for a peach harvesting a hebdomad or more before the Georgia crop starts , meaning Florida peach growers get a jump on the national market .
For the backyard nurseryman or homesteader , peaches are a rich bounce and former summertime treat .
If you ’ve never had a sweetheart invigorated from the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , you ’ve never taste a yellowish pink .

The first time I grew beauty was in Tennessee . There I could grow classic Southern change such asElbertaandBelle of Georgia . I had both in my yard and the fruit was wonderful , though when you grow peach , former freezes have a way of take your blooms right before the “ all - clean ” of frost - spare spring arrives .
Here in North / Central Florida , I ’m growingTropic Beauty , Flordaking , Flordaprinceand aSunraycernectarine , not to bring up the manyseed - originate peachesI’ve planted .
Why would I include a Prunus persica nectarina in my list of peach tree diagram ? Well , they ’re simply a peach without fuzz , able-bodied to sweep - pollinate with peach .

As a natural selection crop , apricot are somewhat lacking . They only get at one point of the year , then take up space the remainder of the clock time .
They ’re also too sweet to be used as a staple fibre and the only thing on a peach tree you’re able to eat is the fruit itself .
But hey – getting through the Apocalypse will be a lot nicer with dear - sweet peach tree , right ?

Decapitate a zombie … eat a peach !
Watch the mushroom clouds billow overhead … deplete a peach !
Wonder as the global financial system crumbles … eat a yellowish pink !

all of a sudden we involve a soundtrack :
If you are n’t yet growing peaches in Florida , I recommend you implant a few . However , pay care to your pall time of day . Not all cultivars will grow in all region of the state .
Here – I looked it up for you over at IFAS :

You ’re probably not going to have luck getting peaches to fruit south of Lake Okeechobee , but why would you care ?
YOU HAVE MANGOS YOU LUCKY SONS OF —
hem .

Look up the chill hours for various cultivars , then plant consequently . I recommend growing a couple different varieties with some shiver hour magnetic variation . That elbow room if one wakes up early and blooms during a warm snap , then loses its blooms , you may hopefully get yield from the 2nd tree diagram that wakes up later in the spring . Genetic variation is your friend .
Pruning
Peaches respond very well to pruning . chop up them in one-half and they ’ll snap properly back . I like to clip in January before they wake up up . Be brutal – you ’ll be stunned how they photograph back .
Alternately , I ’m just letting my seeded player - raise peaches detect their own shape without any pruning at all . If they run out to create well that way , I ’ll begin cutting . If you get potted trees from a nursery , you ’re stuck with pruning since they ’re already been grafted and mold . Quit pruning and you ’re likely to get few fruit , not to observe breaking limb and a terrible shape to the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree .
This brings up another percentage point : modern beauty WAY overproduce yield . You need to thin , slender , thin the slight fruit in the spring when they ’re about the zie of marbles . Thin them to at least 4″ apart from each other , otherwise you ’ll get tons of tiny peach tree crammed close together . entrust me – the peaches are much better when thinned , plus the branches are less probable to break from the stress of carrying hundreds of fruit . Tiny peach are also a pain to outgrowth .

Pests
As for blighter , the worst ones are the plum tree curculio and thepeach rock drill . The curculio tunnels into the growing yield … the peach borer tunnel right into the tree diagram . My feeling from a permaculture linear perspective is that both problems can be minimise through occasionally running wimp beneath your trees , as well as immix them into a full ecosystem , rather than turn them in amonoculture .
Other than insects , you have to fight the squirrels for peaches . They ’ll chew a pickle here and there and pink yield off the tree diagram like the destructive blabber they are .
fritter away and wipe out the squirrels . If they ’re been eating peaches , they come pre - binge .
Nematodes are also really bad for peach . Load up the theme zone with compost and mulch . Also fuddle on mustard William Green , grow marigolds around them , etc . Or spue lots of tobacco plant juice there . Anything to knock the nasties back .
Whatever you do , do n’t develop peaches that are surround by a tintinnabulation of red-hot , dry sound since that ’s nematode heaven .
Growing Peaches From Seed
Now you know I like doing this . It ’s not recommended with peaches and nectarine because of the afore - mentioned nematodes , but they grow so danged fast and well I think it ’s an satisfactory risk of infection . ordinarily , peaches are grafted onto nematode - immune root stock , but your seedling peaches wo n’t have that advantage , so take care of them .
On the upper side , they grow WAY quicker than potted , engraft trees .
My young seedling trees are taller than all the pot Tree I plant a pair of years ago … and goodly , at least for now . Time will enjoin , but I ’ve already get enough devoid peaches to make the experimentation worthwhile .
If you want details on how to grow sweetheart from a nether region , click here . I ’m working on shoot about 200 justly now . Yep . 200 . Go big or go home .
Overall , sweetheart are a very worthwhile addition to the survival garden . When you get a large crop , can it , dry out it , freeze it or wrench it into something flammable , then you may enjoy peaches all class long .
And enjoy them you will .
