Bringing paradise home
My name is Joanne Lacroix , and my married man and I live in Cumberland , Ontario , in a rural sphere just outside of Canada ’s Washington , Ottawa . Our property sit down on an area populate mostly by maple , oak tree , ironwood , andblack walnut tree trees . Despite all the beautiful tree in our forest , we have limitedsoil , and our home is built on immense section of bedrock . My gardening challenge in this Zone 5 locating has been to grow plants in very limited stain and in mostly shady atmospheric condition .
About five old age ago , after having visited a few tropical locating , we thought , why not create atropicalfeeling in our very own backyard ? Our backyard was for the most part unused and undeveloped at the prison term , and so we decided to build a anatomical structure that admit a tiki bar , a seating country with a attack mesa , and an outdoor BBQ zone .
My husband , Ron , design this complex body part , and we built it from mark from the ground up during our summer holiday . We also created apathwaywith interlocking rock that connects to a patio we had already make . The “ palm tree trees ” that are watch in the photos are also a DIY labor . We used woodwind instrument from our timber , cover it with tap wrapping and a concrete paste , and then painted . They are exceed off with artificial green stems that we purchase online .

To add to the tropical feeling of thisoutdoor living space , I have created various bed around the structure and the backyard with finishing toppings of mulch , river stone and stepping stones .
The plants are mostly perennials , such as thisbleeding heart(Dicentra spectabilis , Zones 3–9 ) .
Funka and pot yearly and fern bring more colouration and interest to the landscape painting .

An arbor welcomes you into this part of the garden .
Pops of colouring come from various potted plants and container of yearly , such as this hibiscus(Hibiscusrosa - sinensis , zone 9–11 or as annual ) .
Coleus ( annual ) add more color to the landscape .

Not only does our petty tropic oasis ply us with countless hours of fresh - tune time during the spring , summer , and fall , but we also relish baby-sit at the fire table with blankets during the wintertime months . On cold wintertime days , just gaze outside and see the tropical anatomical structure cue us that the warmth of spring and summertime , and the horticulture opportunities those seasons provide , are just around the niche .
