Looking back at the beauties of last year
Today we ’re in Massachusetts , bring down with Barbara Owen , who is looking back at last summertime ’s dish in the garden while wait for leap .
TheVirginia bluebells(Mertensia virginica , Zones 3–8 ) came home to Massachusetts in a bag of dirt tucked into my grip when I was flying home from Indiana many eld ago . This retiring summertime ’s extreme and unpredictable conditions must have provided the right amount and timing of pelting and sunshine , because both flora bloomed more than in previous twelvemonth .
Thisrhododendron(Rhododendron yakushimanum , geographical zone 5–8 ) come from a big - box store , has been transplant several fourth dimension , and now seems quite glad in its current spot , where we can easily enjoy the magical modulation from deep magenta bud to pink flowers transition to a delicate snowy .

Each time I take the air out the door and see this Exbury hybridazalea(Rhododendron , deciduous azalea group , Zones 5–8 ) backlit by morning sunlight , I have to run for my camera for yet another photo .
Several eld ago this yellow iris surprise me , appear where I had no memory of engraft it . I ’ve pay back its persistence bydividingit and moving it to a good location , where I go for it will be happy .
Hemerocallis‘Miss Amelia ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) join my assemblage of daylilies last summertime . I ’m hoping her pallid yellow will be strong enough in bright sunlight , yet glow in the moonlight or from light from our nearby porch at night .

This chunk of ‘ Strawberry confect ’ daylily sits just outside my kitchen windows , growing enthusiastically in a prize viewpoint .
One summer , my brother ( Doug Downing , who has been featured on the GPOD as well ) read he had to fraction his daylilies . Soon there was a box of these treasures on my front porch , include this double - orange day lily ( Hemerocallisfulva‘Flore Pleno ’ , Zones 4–9 ) . garden are marvellous when they can be shared !
I was going to deadhead theclematis(Clematis‘Sunset ’ , Zones 5–8 ) , but then I disclose this sculptural seed head and decide to shoot it instead .

Our yard is active all season with rabbits , birds , butterfly , and bee . I ’m not thrilled with therabbits , but I design to keep planting more flowers for the bee , butterflies , and chick . I ’ve noticed several beekeeper ’ hives on my neighbourhood walks and wonder if they are the seed of “ my ” Apis mellifera .
